What Field of View Is Best for a Driveway Security Camera?
Choose driveway camera field of view from lane width, vehicle approach, face/plate goals and target distance.
The best driveway field of view is the narrowest one that covers the evidence zone you care about. A wide 100°+ view can be excellent for situational awareness but weak for identifying a face or plate at distance.
Map the target zone first
Decide whether the camera must cover the entire driveway, one lane, a gate, the garage apron or the sidewalk crossing. Then measure the width of that zone at the target distance.
Scene width determines pixel density
A 2560-pixel stream across 20 feet provides 128 PPF. Across 60 feet it provides about 43 PPF. The megapixel count stayed the same; the field of view changed the useful detail dramatically.
Wide overview plus narrow evidence camera
Driveways often justify two cameras: one wide camera to show context and one narrow or varifocal camera aimed at the predictable vehicle/person path. This is especially useful if plates or reliable faces matter.
Account for height and angle
A perfect horizontal field of view can still fail if the camera is mounted too high or too far to the side. Evaluate the three-dimensional approach, not only the top-down width.
