Security Camera Identification Distance Calculator
Estimate how much pixel detail a camera places on a target at a given distance. This is more useful than asking only whether the camera is 2K or 4K.
Why field of view matters so much
A camera divides its horizontal pixels across the entire scene. A 3,840-pixel-wide 4K image spread across a 100-foot-wide scene produces only about 38 pixels per foot. Tighten the lens so the scene is 40 feet wide and the same sensor produces about 96 pixels per foot.
Pixels per foot is not a guarantee of identification
Focus, compression, motion blur, shutter speed, lighting, angle and plate reflection can ruin an image even when pixel density looks adequate. Use PPF as a geometry check, then verify the exact scene under daytime and nighttime conditions.
Useful for driveways and plate capture
This tool is especially useful when deciding whether one wide overview camera can identify a person or vehicle at the road. Often the answer is to add a second, tighter camera at a choke point rather than buying a higher-resolution panoramic camera.
