Parking Lot Security Camera Planning Guide

Parking-lot design is a geometry problem. The same camera count can produce very different results depending on mounting height, field of view, pixel density, light direction, obstructions and where vehicles are forced to pass.

Start with objectives: broad incident context, pedestrian recognition, vehicle identification and license-plate capture are different jobs. Do not expect one wide overview camera to do all four.

Split the lot into surveillance jobs

Use pixel density, not just camera radius

Axis summarizes common IEC 62676-4:2014 planning bands around 8, 20, 40 and 80 pixels per foot for detect, observe, recognize and identify. The higher the required detail, the less area each camera can cover at a given resolution.

Plan traffic-direction cameras separately

Axis parking guidance notes that traffic-oriented views should follow or only slightly angle relative to traffic flow. For plate capture, the dedicated geometry is stricter still. Use a narrow lane view instead of relying on the general parking-lot overview camera.

Mounting height is a tradeoff

Higher poles reduce tampering and can improve overall coverage, but they also steepen subject angle and can reduce identification usefulness near the pole. A site may need high overview cameras plus lower evidence cameras at entrances and vehicle choke points.

Lighting and obstructions change the design

Sunrise/sunset glare, headlights, trees, signs and parked trucks can all create blind areas. Plan overlap around predictable obstructions and test night exposure before considering the design complete.
