License Plate Camera Angle Calculator

Check whether your plate camera is looking too far down or sideways at the vehicle. The calculator combines mounting height and lateral offset into a total camera-to-travel angle.

Calculating…

Formula

The calculator treats camera height and lateral lane offset as one transverse distance, then computes total angle as arctan(transverse distance ÷ capture distance). This matches the geometry described in Axis license-plate capture guidance.

What the shutter lookup means

The shutter result uses the next-more-conservative angle and vehicle-speed band from Axis's published table. It is a planning reference, not an automatic camera setting. Lighting, IR reach, plate reflectivity and exact vehicle path still matter.

Do not optimize only for angle: plate capture also needs enough pixels on the plate, controlled exposure, fast enough shutter and a narrow scene. A general-purpose camera can show a vehicle clearly while still failing to produce readable plates.
