How to Migrate Security Cameras From Wi-Fi to PoE

The best migration is usually selective. Move the cameras whose evidence quality or reliability is hurt by Wi-Fi first, then keep low-risk wireless cameras where cabling cost is not justified.

Prioritize choke points: entrances, driveways, plate lanes, POS areas and other scenes where a dropped connection or delayed clip would matter most.

Migration order

  1. List every camera and classify it as critical evidence, general context or convenience.
  2. Measure cable routes and confirm the normal Ethernet distance budget.
  3. Size switch ports, total PoE watts and uplink bandwidth with headroom.
  4. Move one critical camera first and verify continuous recording, playback and remote access.
  5. Migrate additional cameras in batches, preserving known-good Wi-Fi coverage until each wired zone is proven.

What PoE changes

PoE combines network and power over one Ethernet cable and removes Wi-Fi airtime as a dependency for that camera. It does not automatically fix poor lens choice, storage limits, recorder compatibility or bad outdoor terminations.

Keep some Wi-Fi when it makes sense

Battery/solar or plug-in Wi-Fi can remain useful for temporary views, detached areas and low-priority context cameras where trenching or cable routing is disproportionate. The goal is a reliable architecture, not ideological purity.
