How Far Can a PoE Security Camera Run Over Ethernet?

Understand the standard PoE security-camera cable distance, why 100 meters is the normal Ethernet limit and what to do for longer runs.

For normal copper Ethernet, plan around a maximum channel length of 100 meters (328 feet). That is the networking limit to design around for standard PoE camera installations, not a promise that every cheap cable and high-draw camera will behave perfectly at exactly 100 meters.

Why long runs become harder

As cable length increases, electrical resistance creates more voltage drop and power loss. The data link may still negotiate while a high-draw camera becomes unstable when infrared LEDs or a heater turn on. Cable quality, conductor gauge, temperature and PoE class all matter.

What to do beyond 100 meters

  • Fiber plus a local PoE switch: strong choice between buildings or for very long runs because fiber avoids copper-distance and ground-potential problems.
  • PoE extender: can extend a specific run, but adds another powered component and another failure point.
  • Intermediate switch: practical when a secure powered location exists partway.
  • Wireless bridge: useful when trenching cable is impractical and clear line of sight exists.

Do not treat “long-range PoE” marketing as universal Ethernet

Some proprietary switch modes trade link speed or rely on vendor-specific behavior to push farther than standard Ethernet distances. That can be useful, but document the dependency so a future switch replacement does not unexpectedly break the camera run.

For detached buildings

Between structures, fiber is often the cleaner long-term backbone. It provides electrical isolation and lets you place a normal PoE switch near the remote cameras instead of forcing several very long copper runs back to the main house.
