Weatherproofing a PoE Security Camera Ethernet Connection

An IP67 camera body does not automatically make an exposed RJ45 coupler waterproof. The Ethernet connection needs its own correctly assembled seal.

Protect the connector, not just the camera. Water intrusion at the RJ45 can cause corrosion, intermittent links, negotiation problems or complete loss of power/data.

Use the manufacturer’s weatherproof hardware

Reolink and TP-Link both document multi-part outdoor Ethernet seals that use a weatherproof body plus rubber/O-ring components around the RJ45 connection. Assemble the parts in the specified order and tighten them fully so the seals seat correctly.

Outdoor installation checklist

Confirm the camera’s weatherproof cap/kit matches the model and cable setup.
Inspect O-rings and rubber seals for damage, dirt, twisting or incomplete seating.
Keep exposed couplers out of standing water and avoid routing that funnels water toward the connector.
Use outdoor-rated cable where the cable itself is exposed to weather/UV.
After storms or service work, inspect the connector if the link becomes intermittent.

Do not seal in moisture

If a connector has already been wet, investigate and dry/repair the connection before simply wrapping or resealing it. Corrosion inside a sealed connector can keep causing faults even after the exterior looks protected.
