When Should You Upgrade a 1080p Security Camera to 4K?

Upgrade when the current camera cannot put enough useful pixels on the subject you need to identify. Do not upgrade merely because 4K is newer.

Decision rule: define the required scene width at the target distance, then calculate pixel density. More resolution helps only if lens choice, lighting, shutter speed and compression preserve that extra detail.

Keep the 1080p camera when

  • It already provides enough detail for the operational goal at the actual target distance.
  • The scene is narrow and well lit.
  • The main failure is blur, glare, dirty optics or poor angle rather than lack of pixels.
  • More bitrate/storage would create more cost without materially better evidence.

Upgrade when

  • You need to cover a wider scene while preserving recognition or identification detail.
  • Digital cropping is necessary after incidents and the 1080p image runs out of usable detail.
  • The old camera cannot support the lens/FOV, low-light behavior or analytics required at that location.

Use pixel density, not labels

Axis’s current IEC 62676 guidance frames surveillance detail in pixels per unit distance rather than megapixel labels. The 2014 DORI model uses about 8 / 20 / 40 / 80 px/ft for detect / observe / recognize / identify, while the newer 2025 framework changes terminology but keeps the same principle: resolution only matters in relation to scene width and task.
