When Should You Replace a PoE Switch for Security Cameras?

Replace the switch when it is the limiting component—not just because newer switches offer more watts or faster uplinks.

Audit five limits: powered ports, total PoE budget, maximum watts per port, uplink bandwidth and link reliability.

Clear upgrade signals

  • No spare powered ports for planned cameras.
  • Nighttime load, heaters, IR or PTZ pushes the switch close to its total PoE budget.
  • A new device requires PoE+ or PoE++ beyond the old switch’s per-port standard.
  • Uplink utilization or error counters show congestion/drops under normal recording load.
  • Known-good cameras/cables become stable only when moved off the old switch.

Power standards matter

Cisco’s current PoE guidance lists IEEE 802.3af at 15.4W from the source, 802.3at at 30W, and 802.3bt classes up to 60W or 90W. Actual power available at the device is lower because of cable loss, so design margin matters. Cisco PoE guide.

Do not replace the switch for a cable fault

If only one camera is unstable, swap the camera to a known-good port and test the suspect cable before replacing the switch. If the problem follows the cable, fix the run or termination. If it stays with the port, the switch becomes more suspect.
