PoE Camera Keeps Disconnecting: How to Isolate the Fault

An intermittent camera is harder to diagnose than a dead one because power, Ethernet and video may fail independently. Use swap tests so the problem has somewhere to “follow.”

Fastest test: move the camera temporarily to a known-good short cable and known-good PoE port. If instability disappears, the original field link becomes the primary suspect.

1. Check the physical link

  • Inspect outdoor connectors for moisture, corrosion, loose couplers or damaged cable jackets.
  • Watch the switch/NVR port link indicator when the camera drops.
  • Test a shorter known-good Ethernet cable and a different PoE port.

2. Check PoE power margin

A switch can have enough ports but not enough total PoE watts, especially when IR, spotlights, heaters or PTZ motors increase nighttime load. Compare actual camera draw with switch budget and leave headroom.

3. Separate link loss from IP/stream loss

If the Ethernet link stays up but video drops, check IP conflicts, VLAN/isolation rules, recorder credentials and stream settings. If the link itself flaps, stay focused on cable, connectors, port power and camera hardware.
