PoE Security Camera Packet Loss and Dropped Frames
Packet loss can look like camera freezes, blocky video, stream reconnects or missing frames. The useful question is where loss enters the path: camera link, access switch, uplink, recorder or client.
1. Identify scope
- One camera only: start with that camera, cable and switch port.
- Several cameras on one switch: inspect the switch/uplink and PoE load.
- All cameras at the recorder: check recorder NIC/load, uplink and network configuration.
2. Check physical/link evidence
Look for link flaps, switch error counters, bad connectors and a failure that follows a cable or port. Test a known-good short cable before changing codecs or recorder settings.
3. Check bandwidth concentration
Add the camera bitrates that share each uplink. A gigabit link has substantial capacity, but bursts, other traffic, oversubscribed intermediate links or a slower negotiated port can still create drops. Confirm actual negotiated link speed rather than assuming every port is running at its label speed.
4. Check network design
Review duplicate IPs, VLAN/isolation rules, routing paths and recorder access. Avoid changing MTU or advanced switch features randomly; first establish whether loss is visible on a specific physical segment.
5. Reduce load only as a diagnostic
Temporarily lower one or more stream bitrates or camera counts. If loss disappears, investigate the shared bottleneck; do not leave quality permanently reduced without understanding why the network failed at the original load.
