Self-Storage Gate License Plate Camera Guide
The gate is the highest-value vehicle choke point at a self-storage facility because every entering or exiting vehicle passes through a predictable lane that can be correlated with access events.
Plate-camera geometry
Keep lateral and vertical angle controlled and place the capture point where vehicles slow or stop naturally. Use the License Plate Camera Angle Calculator; Axis plate-capture guidance generally recommends keeping total camera-to-vehicle angle below about 30°.
Correlate with access events
Timestamp consistency matters. Gate controller events, keypad/mobile credentials and video should be synchronized closely enough that staff can match a vehicle to the corresponding access event without searching hours of footage.
Retention matters more than at a front door
Storage-facility incidents can be discovered well after entry. Model the actual investigation window rather than defaulting to a short consumer-style retention period.
