Security Cameras During a Power Outage vs an Internet Outage

Compare what fails during power loss and internet loss across PoE, Wi-Fi, battery, NVR, cloud and cellular camera systems.

A power outage and an internet outage break different parts of a security system. Treating them as the same failure leads to bad backup design.

Internet resilience is mostly architectural

Local NVR, microSD and NAS systems can preserve footage without broadband. Remote push notifications may stop, but the evidence path can remain intact.

Power resilience requires stored energy

Wired cameras need a UPS, generator or other backup source. A PoE system is convenient because one UPS can support the NVR and PoE switch, keeping many cameras alive from one central battery.

Battery cameras solve only part of the problem

A battery camera can survive a utility outage, but if the router loses power it may lose remote alerts. Pairing the router/modem with a small UPS can preserve connectivity while the cameras run on their own batteries.

Cellular changes the failure domain

A cellular camera removes dependence on the local internet provider and router, but it introduces carrier coverage, SIM/data-plan and battery/solar dependencies. For remote properties, that can still be the better failure model.
