Battery Backup for a Router, Modem and Security Cameras

Build a practical backup-power plan for routers, modems, NVRs and cameras without wasting UPS runtime on nonessential equipment.

Keeping security cameras online during a short outage often requires much less power than backing up an entire office. The key is choosing which network devices are actually required for recording and which are only required for remote access.

Minimum local-recording chain

For a PoE NVR system, the minimum chain may be only the PoE switch and NVR. If the NVR has built-in PoE ports, one recorder can power and record all cameras without the home router.

For remote notifications

Add the router plus modem, cable gateway or fiber ONT. Fiber/cable service may remain available during neighborhood outages if the provider's upstream equipment is still powered, so keeping your own network gear alive can preserve remote access.

For Wi-Fi cameras

The router or access point becomes part of the camera path. A battery camera may have plenty of energy while the Wi-Fi network disappears after five minutes because the router was not backed up.

Prioritize loads

  • NVR/recorder.
  • PoE switch or Wi-Fi access point used by cameras.
  • Router/firewall.
  • Modem/ONT if remote access matters.
  • Avoid monitors, speakers and unrelated computers unless necessary.

Use measured watts where possible

Plug-in power meters and managed PoE switches can provide better real-world estimates than nameplate maxima, but keep margin for nighttime camera load and battery aging.

Efficiency rule: the easiest way to extend UPS runtime is often to remove loads that do not contribute to recording or connectivity.
