Security Camera for License Plates on a Driveway: What Actually Matters

Choose a driveway camera for plate capture by angle, target size, shutter, lighting, focal length and placement—not just resolution.

Reading license plates is one of the hardest residential camera jobs. Headlights, reflective plates, speed, distance and wide-angle lenses can defeat an otherwise excellent security camera.

Most important principle: dedicate enough pixels to the plate. A 4K camera aimed at a huge scene can produce fewer useful plate pixels than a lower-resolution camera with a tighter lens.

Use a choke point

Place the camera where every vehicle must pass through a predictable zone: driveway entrance, gate, narrow lane or parking approach. The more predictable the target distance and angle, the easier it is to configure exposure and focus.

Keep the horizontal angle shallow

A plate seen at a severe angle becomes narrower and harder to read. Mounting closer to the direction of vehicle travel usually produces better plate geometry than filming from far off to the side.

Night capture is a different problem

Headlights can overwhelm a normal night scene. Plate capture often needs a faster shutter, controlled infrared illumination and exposure tuned for the reflective plate rather than for a bright-looking overall image. The resulting scene may look darker but produce more useful plate detail.

Overview plus identification

The most robust residential design uses two views: one broad camera for context and one narrower camera aimed specifically at the plate zone. Do not force one lens to be both a panoramic overview and an identification camera.
