What Focal Length Is Best for a Driveway Security Camera?
Choose driveway security-camera focal length from lane width, target distance, sensor size and the level of detail you actually need.
There is no universally correct driveway lens. A 2.8mm lens is useful when the camera is close and the goal is broad awareness. A longer 4mm, 6mm or varifocal lens is often better when the important target is farther down the drive and identification matters more than seeing the whole yard.
Start with target distance and scene width
At the exact point where you want useful evidence, measure how wide the scene must be. A single driveway lane may only need roughly 10–14 feet of width. A wide two-car drive can require 20–30 feet. Narrower required width generally supports a longer lens and more pixels per foot.
Why sensor size matters
The same 4mm lens does not produce the same horizontal field of view on every camera. Sensor width changes the angle, so focal length should never be chosen from millimeters alone. Use the manufacturer’s horizontal FOV when available, or calculate from the active sensor width.

Do not use one camera for incompatible jobs
A wide overview camera and a narrow identification camera solve different problems. Trying to cover the entire property and read a face or plate 80 feet away with one fixed wide-angle camera usually produces weak evidence.
