Best Security Camera Angle for License Plates in a Driveway

Plan driveway plate capture around lane width, horizontal and vertical angle, shutter speed, distance and dedicated framing.

Plate capture is much less forgiving than ordinary surveillance. A plate is small, reflective and often moving. Wide overview framing, steep angles and slow night shutter speeds can make an otherwise sharp camera useless for plate evidence.

Keep the approach angle controlled

Axis guidance for dedicated license-plate capture recommends keeping the total angle to the vehicle’s direction below about 30° for its plate-capture designs. A straighter view reduces perspective distortion and helps keep more characters in focus.

Do not mount unnecessarily high

High mounting can add vertical angle and show more hood than plate. A lower camera aimed through a narrow vehicle choke point generally produces stronger plate geometry than a roofline overview camera.

Use a dedicated narrow scene

Plate cameras should cover the lane, not the whole driveway and front yard. A tighter field of view places more pixels on the plate and allows exposure settings optimized for vehicles instead of people and landscaping.

Night capture needs different exposure

Fast shutter speed reduces motion blur but lets in less light. Dedicated plate cameras often combine tight framing, controlled infrared and plate-oriented exposure settings. A generic color night camera may wash out reflective plates.

Architecture: use one camera for overall vehicle context and a second narrow camera for plate detail when plate evidence actually matters.
