RTSP Security Cameras Without a Subscription

How RTSP can support local live view and recording without recurring cloud storage fees, plus what to verify before buying.

An RTSP stream gives local software a direct video source. That makes it useful for NVRs, NAS software, Frigate, VLC and other local systems because the recorder can ingest the stream without purchasing cloud video history.

RTSP is only one layer

A camera can expose RTSP but still reserve AI alerts or app history for a paid plan. Conversely, a camera may support subscription-free local recording without RTSP. Treat protocol support and fee structure as separate specifications.

What to verify

  • Main stream and substream URLs.
  • H.264/H.265 codec support.
  • Whether RTSP works standalone or only through a hub/NVR.
  • Whether the stream persists with internet blocked.
  • Whether authentication is local.

Why substreams matter

Local AI software such as Frigate can use a lower-resolution stream for detection while recording the full-resolution stream. That reduces decoding load without throwing away evidence quality.
