“Local storage” is not one feature. We separated six ecosystems by what is actually documented: where footage lives, whether a subscription is required, whether RTSP/ONVIF are documented, and how easily the system can participate in a local NVR or self-hosted setup.

Key finding: Reolink has the clearest documented open-protocol path in this group on compatible models, while eufy, ZOSI and AOSU emphasize subscription-free local storage more than broad third-party interoperability. Arlo supports local storage through compatible SmartHubs/Base Stations, while Ring Edge local storage still requires a compatible Ring subscription.

Why we did not assign a fake 1–10 “privacy score”

Privacy and local-first capability are architectural, not cosmetic. A brand can offer excellent local storage while exposing few open protocols. Another can expose RTSP and ONVIF while still using a cloud app for onboarding. A single score hides those differences, so this dataset keeps the underlying capabilities separate.

Methodology

We reviewed current manufacturer documentation and official support pages available on September 13, 2026. A feature is marked documented only when the source used explicitly describes it. “Not verified” does not mean the feature definitely does not exist; it means we did not find adequate current official documentation to claim broad support at the ecosystem level.

Protocol support can vary dramatically by model. Reolink, for example, explicitly documents different RTSP/ONVIF behavior for wired, battery, LTE and hub-connected products. Always confirm the exact model before purchase.

How to use this scorecard

If your priority is Frigate, Home Assistant or a third-party NVR, start with documented local streams and protocols. If your priority is simply avoiding monthly cloud fees, local storage may matter more than open standards. The right architecture depends on what you want to own: the footage, the intelligence layer, the recorder, or all three.
