How Many Security Cameras Can a Gigabit Network Handle?
Estimate how many IP cameras fit on a 1 Gbps network using real camera bitrate, uplink headroom and recorder architecture instead of resolution labels.
A gigabit Ethernet link can carry far more normal security-camera traffic than most home or small-business systems generate. The correct calculation is not “how many 4K cameras?” It is the sum of the configured bitrates crossing the shared link.

Those are bandwidth ceilings, not sensible camera-system sizes. Recorder decoding limits, NVR channel count, switch ports, PoE power budget and storage will usually become constraints first.
Where the bottleneck actually appears
Each PoE camera may connect to the access switch at only 100 Mbps and still work perfectly because a normal camera stream is a fraction of that. What matters is the shared uplink from the camera switch to the NVR, router or core switch. If 24 cameras each send 8 Mbps, the uplink carries roughly 192 Mbps of steady video before overhead.
Keep surveillance traffic local when possible
A PoE camera recording to an NVR on the same LAN does not need to send that video over the internet. Remote viewing and cloud backup are separate WAN workloads. Keeping the main recording path local improves resilience and avoids wasting internet upload capacity.
Use a realistic headroom target
Do not plan a shared uplink to live at its theoretical maximum. Other traffic, playback, firmware updates, bitrate spikes and future cameras all consume capacity. For a dedicated camera VLAN, designing so continuous camera traffic stays comfortably below the uplink ceiling makes troubleshooting easier.
