How Far Can a 4K Security Camera Identify a Face?

Estimate 4K face-identification distance from field of view, horizontal pixels, scene width and real-world detail loss.

“4K” does not provide a fixed identification distance. A 3840-pixel-wide image spread across a 100-foot scene gives about 38 pixels per foot. The same camera framed across 40 feet gives about 96 pixels per foot. The lens and scene width determine whether those pixels land on the face.

Geometric planning threshold

IEC 62676-4 based guidance commonly associates identification with about 250 pixels per meter, roughly 76 pixels per foot. That is a planning density, not a guarantee of identification in difficult conditions.

Example

A 4K stream with 3840 horizontal pixels can theoretically maintain 76 PPF across about 50.5 feet of scene width. The distance at which that width occurs depends on horizontal FOV. A narrow 40° lens reaches that width much farther away than a 100° wide-angle lens.

What reduces real identification distance

  • Motion blur from slow shutter speed.
  • Low-light noise and aggressive denoising.
  • Compression artifacts.
  • Subject looking away from the camera.
  • Steep vertical or horizontal angle.
  • Digital zoom after the fact rather than optical framing.
Better question: how wide is the scene at my target distance, and how many recorded pixels cover each foot? That is far more useful than asking how far “4K” can see.
