Cat5e vs Cat6 for Security Cameras: Which Cable Should You Run?
Compare Cat5e and Cat6 for PoE security cameras by gigabit bandwidth, cable length, interference, power delivery and installation cost.
Most individual security cameras do not need Cat6 for video bandwidth. A normal camera stream may be only a few megabits per second, while properly installed Cat5e supports gigabit Ethernet over standard channel lengths. The case for Cat6 is therefore more about installation margin, interference, power delivery and future use than the camera's current bitrate.
Cat5e is enough for many camera runs
For a normal PoE camera under the standard Ethernet distance limit, quality solid-copper Cat5e can carry both power and data comfortably. It is often the economical choice when cable routes are easy and electromagnetic interference is limited.
Why Cat6 can still be worth it
Cat6 typically gives more crosstalk margin and is commonly built with heavier conductors than basic Cat5e cable. That can be useful on long PoE runs, high-power devices and installations near electrical noise. It also gives more flexibility if the cable is later reused for higher-speed networking.

Avoid copper-clad aluminum
Cable category does not rescue poor conductor material. For PoE surveillance, use standards-compliant solid copper cable from a reputable source. Resistance matters because the cable is delivering power as well as data.
Outdoor cable is a separate question
For exterior runs, choose cable and pathway rated for the actual environment: sunlight, moisture, conduit, burial and surge exposure. “Cat6” alone does not mean a cable is suitable outdoors.
