Best Security Camera for License Plates at 100 Feet

At 100 feet, a general-purpose security camera becomes a much riskier plate-capture choice. The right answer is usually a dedicated license-plate capture camera with telephoto framing, controlled IR and exposure settings designed for moving reflective plates.

Our database answer: no current general-purpose model in the SecurityVerdicts database is labeled a dedicated LPC camera. The RLC-843A and RLC-811A can provide useful 5× optical framing for slow private driveways, but we would not present them as guaranteed 100-foot plate solutions.

Why 100 feet changes the problem

You need both a narrow enough field of view to put sufficient pixels on the plate and enough depth of field, IR reach and shutter speed to freeze the vehicle. Small mistakes in mounting angle or lane position matter more as the system becomes more specialized.

Angle can actually improve with distance

For the same camera height and lateral offset, greater capture distance reduces the total viewing angle. Axis's plate-capture tables show that longer capture distances can make geometry easier—but optics, IR and motion then become harder constraints.

Do not use IR range as evidence range

A camera advertised with 100-foot IR does not automatically provide readable plates at 100 feet. IR reach describes illumination, not plate pixel density, motion blur or reflective exposure control.

Use a dedicated LPC camera when reliability matters

For a gate, HOA entrance, business driveway or any case where the plate must be readable consistently, a dedicated LPC/LPR camera is the safer architecture. A second overview camera should capture vehicle context.
