Best Security Camera Height for Face Identification

Plan mounting height for facial detail without creating an overly steep angle that hides useful facial features.

Mounting higher makes a camera harder to tamper with, but it also makes the face angle steeper. For identification, excessive height can turn the useful facial view into mostly forehead and hair.

Practical goal: place the identification camera low enough to preserve a useful face angle and far enough from the subject that the lens can frame the approach path rather than looking almost straight down.

Height is only one part of the geometry

A camera at 9 feet looking at a person 30 feet away has a much shallower angle than the same camera looking at someone 4 feet from the wall. Target distance, lens FOV and mounting pitch all matter.

Use separate overview and identification views when necessary

Exterior soffit cameras often work well for overview coverage. A second camera closer to head height at a doorway, gate or narrow approach can provide substantially better face geometry.

Pixel density still matters

IEC 62676-4 style DORI guidance commonly uses about 250 pixels per meter (roughly 76 pixels per foot) as a geometric identification planning threshold. Real results still depend on light, motion, focus, compression and subject angle.

Avoid extreme top-down views

If the camera is directly over the door and very close to the subject, a high mounting point can create an unnecessarily steep pitch. Moving the camera laterally or farther from the target zone can improve facial geometry without making the camera easy to reach.
