When Do No-Subscription Security Cameras Pay for Themselves?
Calculate the break-even period for paying more upfront for a local-storage camera system to avoid recurring subscription fees.
A no-subscription system does not automatically save money. It saves money when the extra hardware cost is smaller than the subscription fees avoided during your ownership period.
Break-even examples
| Extra local-system cost | Annual fee avoided | Break-even |
|---|---|---|
| $150 | $50 | 3 years |
| $250 | $100 | 2.5 years |
| $400 | $216 | 1.85 years |
Include storage replacement
Local systems use hard drives, microSD cards and sometimes hubs that may need replacement. Add realistic ownership costs rather than treating $0 monthly fee as $0 cost forever.
Price increases favor local systems
Cloud prices can rise over time. Wyze's 2026 Cam Plus increase is a concrete example. A break-even model that assumes flat subscription pricing is therefore conservative if future fees rise.
Useful rule: if the break-even period is shorter than the number of years you expect to keep the system, local storage has a strong economic case even before privacy and outage-resilience benefits.
