When to Replace a UPS Battery in a Security Camera System

A UPS can still report normal line power while its battery has lost much of the runtime you expected. Backup power has to be tested as a battery system, not judged by whether the front panel is lit.

Planning benchmark: Schneider Electric says most APC VRLA UPS batteries are expected to last about 3–5 years, with heat and discharge history strongly affecting life. Other brands and battery chemistries can differ.

Replacement signals

Failed self-test or replace-battery warning.
Runtime under realistic NVR + PoE + network load is materially below the design target.
Battery age is entering the manufacturer’s expected replacement window.
Swelling, leakage, overheating or other physical battery damage.
The UPS has spent years in a hot equipment closet or experienced frequent deep discharges.

Test the actual camera load

Measure or estimate the NVR, PoE switch, cameras and network equipment that must stay alive during an outage. Use the UPS Runtime Calculator, then compare the planned runtime with a controlled test that does not put critical evidence at risk.

After battery replacement

Run the vendor’s self-test, verify the UPS recognizes the replacement battery, and confirm the recorder/camera system stays online through a short controlled transfer to battery power if operationally safe.
