Security Camera for a Long Driveway: What Actually Works
Distance turns a camera purchase into a system-design problem.
Define the evidence you need
Detecting that a car entered, recognizing the vehicle, identifying a face and reading a license plate are different objectives. Each requires progressively more target detail. A camera can advertise 4K resolution and still produce a tiny, useless vehicle at the road if the field of view is too wide.
Get the network to the right place
If trenching is feasible, a wired network is the predictable answer. Across clear line of sight, point-to-point wireless can bridge a long gap. A cellular camera works where the gate is genuinely independent from the home network, but adds a data plan and is less attractive for heavy continuous streaming.
Power at the entrance
Existing gate power gives you the most flexibility. Without it, solar and battery systems can cover entry events, but the panel needs enough real-world sun for winter and repeated activations. Do not size solar around perfect summer conditions.
Nighttime vehicle capture is harder
Headlights create extreme contrast. For plate capture, angle, distance, shutter behavior and target size matter more than generic night-vision claims. If plates are mission-critical, use a dedicated tighter camera instead of expecting a broad overview camera to perform both jobs.
A robust two-camera design
Use one overview view for context and one narrower view where every vehicle must pass. This provides both the event sequence and identification detail.
