Cellular vs Wi-Fi Security Cameras

Choose cellular when

The site has no fixed broadband, sits beyond practical Wi-Fi range or needs a temporary camera that can move without network installation. Gates, barns, jobsites, storage yards and RVs are natural candidates.

Choose Wi-Fi when

The camera is within a reliable existing network and you want simple remote access without a separate SIM plan. For frequent live viewing, Wi-Fi is usually more economical because video does not consume a metered mobile allowance.

Cellular failure modes

Weak carrier signal, network outages, exhausted data allowances and power constraints can all interrupt remote access. Prefer a camera that keeps recording locally when the LTE link disappears.

Wi-Fi failure modes

Weak signal, router reboots, congestion and ISP outages are more common. Local recording again reduces the impact: losing internet should not have to mean losing video.

Architecture principle: connectivity should deliver alerts and remote access; local storage should preserve evidence when the connection fails.
