Why residential Wi-Fi assumptions fail

A construction site may have no finished broadband, no permanent power at the perimeter and a layout that changes weekly. Cellular cameras are attractive because they can report events independently of site networking. Solar can reduce wiring requirements when the panel has adequate light.

Prioritize the high-loss zones

  • Main vehicle and pedestrian entrances.
  • Tool trailers and temporary offices.
  • Fuel tanks and generators.
  • Material storage and equipment yards.
  • Dark perimeter areas used after hours.

Use schedules to control alert volume

A live jobsite generates continuous legitimate motion during working hours. Sensitivity that is useful at 2 a.m. can be unusable at noon. Use schedules, activity zones and person/vehicle classification so the system changes behavior when the site closes.

Mount for identification

Very high overview cameras provide context but can make faces and plates too small. Put at least one camera at a controlled entrance where the target passes through a predictable zone. Overview plus identification is a stronger design than trying to make one lens do both jobs.

Do the cellular math before deploying ten cameras

Short uploaded events may consume modest data, but repeated live viewing can multiply usage quickly. A fleet of cameras also multiplies background traffic and event volume. Estimate the system before choosing SIM plans.
