Who should choose it
Choose it when you want more recorded pixels across a moderately wide fixed scene and do not need optical zoom. Higher resolution also increases storage and bitrate pressure, so size the NVR accordingly.

12MP changes storage economics more than system architecture
The RLC-1212A remains a fixed-lens PoE camera, but Reolink documents 4512×2512 video at up to 20fps from a 4mm F1.6 lens. Its horizontal field of view is 97°. The higher pixel count can preserve more detail across a broad scene, but it does not create the framing flexibility of optical zoom.
Use resolution where it buys useful evidence
This model makes the most sense when the camera must cover a moderately wide fixed scene and you expect to crop into recorded footage. If the subject occupies only a tiny portion of the frame because the camera is too far away, moving the camera or using a narrower/varifocal lens can be more valuable than adding pixels.
Local-first recording options
Reolink's current specification lists 802.3af PoE, microSD storage up to 512GB, H.265/H.264, RTSP and FTP, with motion, scheduled and 24/7 recording modes. Person, vehicle and pet detection are handled without a mandatory alert subscription. The integrated spotlight can provide color night vision while IR remains available for black-and-white operation.
Plan bitrate and retention together
Reolink allows a comparatively high mainstream bitrate for this 12MP stream. For continuous recording, calculate storage from actual configured bitrate, camera count and retention target. A 12MP fleet can push NVR disk requirements up quickly compared with lower-bitrate 4K cameras.
