What Size PoE Switch Do You Need for 16 Security Cameras?
Plan a 16-camera PoE network by switch port count, power budget, uplink bandwidth, PTZ load and future capacity.
Sixteen-camera systems are where PoE switch selection stops being a simple port-count exercise. Total power budget, uplink design and future expansion become material because the switch may be powering the entire perimeter continuously.

A 16-port switch marketed as “PoE+ on every port” may still have a total budget below these numbers. Read the total PoE budget in watts, not only the per-port specification.
Do you need more than 16 physical ports?
Possibly. Some switches use separate SFP or Ethernet uplink ports, while others do not. If one of the 16 copper ports must connect to the NVR or core switch, you may only have 15 left for cameras. A 24-port model can also provide spare ports for future cameras, access points or intercoms.
Bandwidth is still manageable
Sixteen cameras at 8 Mbps each create roughly 128 Mbps of aggregate video. A gigabit uplink handles that comfortably. The bigger concern is recorder capacity: verify that the NVR can ingest the total Mbps, decode the intended streams and write them to disk continuously.
When to split across two switches
Two access switches can make sense when cameras are physically divided across a building, when cable runs would otherwise be awkward, or when you want failure isolation. If one switch loses power, the other camera group can remain online. The tradeoff is more hardware, UPS planning and network design.
