PoE Injector vs PoE Switch for Security Cameras

Choose between PoE injectors and PoE switches for one camera, several cameras, long runs and retrofit installations.

A PoE injector adds power to one Ethernet run. A PoE switch powers multiple network devices directly. Both can run a security camera correctly; the better choice depends on camera count and network layout.

When a PoE injector is cleaner

An injector is useful when you need to add one PoE camera to an existing non-PoE network switch, when replacing the whole switch makes no sense, or when a specialty camera needs a different power standard than the rest of the system.

When a PoE switch wins

Once you have several cameras, a PoE switch reduces power adapters, centralizes backup power and gives you one place to inspect link and power status. It also makes expansion simpler because new camera ports are already available.

Check standards on both sides

The injector or switch must supply a PoE standard compatible with the camera. Avoid passive “PoE” products unless the camera explicitly requires that proprietary voltage arrangement; normal IEEE-negotiated PoE is safer and easier to replace.

Decision rule: one retrofit camera often favors an injector. A planned multi-camera system usually favors a PoE switch with enough total budget and spare ports.
