Motion recording saves storage. Continuous recording preserves context. The right choice depends on what happens when detection fails.
Motion recording
Event-based recording works well for battery cameras and low-traffic locations. It reduces storage dramatically and makes review faster. The weakness is dependence on the detection system: if the camera wakes late, classifies incorrectly or misses subtle movement, there may be no complete record of the event.
Continuous recording
24/7 recording is preferable at entrances, driveways, businesses and high-value areas where context matters. It consumes more storage and normally requires reliable power, but it allows you to rewind before and after the event instead of trusting the trigger.
The hybrid model
A strong NVR setup can record continuously while marking motion or AI events on the timeline. That preserves full evidence while keeping review efficient.
