License Plate Is White at Night: Fixing Overexposure
Reflective plates can return infrared light far more strongly than the surrounding scene. A camera that exposes the whole driveway nicely can therefore blow out the exact plate detail you need.
Overview and plate capture are different jobs. A dedicated plate camera can run a darker, faster exposure while another camera preserves useful vehicle and scene context.
Diagnose the failure
- If the plate is a white rectangle, reduce the plate-target exposure/brightness rather than judging the rest of the scene.
- If the plate is readable when stopped but smeared while moving, shutter speed is also too slow.
- If only some approach angles fail, revisit IR reflection and camera-to-plate geometry.
Adjustment order
- Clean the lens and confirm the plate is not being hit by extreme headlight/backlight glare.
- Shorten shutter time enough for vehicle speed.
- Reduce exposure level / target brightness or IR intensity if the camera provides those controls.
- Retest the actual approach lane at night.
- Use dedicated LPR framing if a wide overview camera cannot hold both scene detail and reflective plates.
