H.264 vs H.265 for Security Cameras: Storage and Bandwidth Differences
Understand how H.264 and H.265 change surveillance storage, bandwidth, compatibility and recorder load.
H.265 exists to preserve similar visual quality at a lower bitrate than H.264, but the exact savings are scene-dependent. A clean static hallway compresses differently from heavy rain, moving leaves or a crowded store.
Why H.265 saves space
H.265 uses more advanced prediction and larger coding structures to avoid repeatedly storing information that changes little between frames. Lower bitrate means lower NVR storage consumption and less network traffic.
The tradeoff is processing and compatibility
Older NVRs, browsers, software and mobile devices may handle H.264 more reliably. H.265 also requires more compute to encode and decode. Before changing a whole system, verify that the recorder can decode every camera stream at the intended resolution and frame rate.
When H.264 is still reasonable
- Older NVRs or third-party software with limited H.265 support.
- Low camera counts where storage is not a constraint.
- Workflows where broad playback compatibility matters more than efficiency.
When H.265 is the better default
For modern multi-camera systems, especially 4MP and 4K continuous recording, storage and bandwidth savings can be significant enough to justify the newer codec.
