Gym Security Camera Placement Guide

Gyms need enough video to explain access, theft and floor incidents without turning privacy-sensitive areas into surveillance zones.

Privacy boundary: do not place cameras in locker rooms, changing areas, showers or restrooms. Hallway cameras near these spaces should be angled so the interior never enters frame when doors open. Check applicable local rules.

Priority order

  1. Main member entry / access-control point.
  2. Reception, pro shop or transaction counter.
  3. Workout-floor overviews for incident context.
  4. Hallways and secondary exits.
  5. Parking, bike racks or exterior approaches when needed.

Mirrors and lighting create false confidence

Gym mirrors multiply glare, apparent coverage and privacy risk. Test the actual recorded image from multiple lighting states; a camera that looks well positioned in daylight can become useless when exterior windows or mirrored walls dominate exposure.

24-hour gyms need stronger entry evidence

When staff are absent, the member entry path becomes the highest-value camera. Pair video with access-control timestamps rather than relying on a general floor overview to identify who entered.

Use the Business Camera Count Planner and project cost calculator for first-pass sizing.
