Best Local-Storage Security Camera for Home Assistant
For Home Assistant, the strongest camera is not simply one with an app. It should expose useful local entities and video streams while continuing to work when internet access is restricted.
| Model / architecture | Why it fits Home Assistant | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Reolink CX810 | Directly listed among tested Reolink models by Home Assistant; local RTSP/ONVIF architecture and microSD recording | Best verified direct camera pick, especially for low-light color scenes |
| Reolink RLC-810A | PoE, local recording and open local streams; verify exact firmware against the integration | Simple fixed outdoor PoE node |
| Reolink NVR + compatible cameras | Home Assistant documents NVR integration and media-browser access to recordings for supported setups | Multi-camera local system |
Why the Reolink integration is unusually useful
Home Assistant's current Reolink integration documentation says Reolink cameras can operate fully locally, can continue working when internet access is blocked, and can expose multiple stream types plus AI/motion entities depending on the model. Recordings from supported SD-card or NVR setups can also be browsed through Home Assistant.
Watch simultaneous connections
The Home Assistant documentation also warns that cameras can have limited simultaneous connections. Running Home Assistant, Frigate, ONVIF and other clients from the same host can overload some cameras. Plan stream consumers deliberately rather than opening every protocol from every service.
