15 FPS vs 30 FPS for Security Cameras: Which Is Better?

Security video does not need to look like sports television to be useful evidence. Higher frame rate makes motion look smoother and can provide more frames during a fast event, but it also increases bitrate or forces the encoder to spread the same bitrate across more frames.

15fps is enough for many fixed security views

Entrances, hallways, yards and parking areas often work well around 10–15fps when the goal is to understand events and identify people moving at normal speed. Lower frame rate can reduce storage and network demand.

30fps helps with fast motion

Driveways, cash-handling areas, machinery, quick hand movement and plate capture can benefit from more temporal detail. But frame rate alone does not solve motion blur; shutter speed, lighting and exposure are equally important.

Storage impact

If the encoder keeps similar quality per frame, 30fps generally requires more bitrate than 15fps. If bitrate stays fixed, the encoder may compress each frame more aggressively. That means “double the frame rate” does not always equal “double the storage,” but it usually raises the resource requirement.

Recommendation: start around 15fps for general surveillance and spend the saved bitrate on image detail. Move toward 30fps only where the evidence objective justifies it.
