RTSP vs ONVIF for Security Cameras
RTSP and ONVIF are complementary, not competing labels.
Simple version: RTSP commonly answers “can I pull the video stream?” ONVIF can add discovery, events, PTZ and other standardized interactions depending on the supported profile.
What RTSP does
RTSP is commonly used by IP cameras to expose a video stream to an NVR, NAS or local viewer. It improves optionality outside the manufacturer app, but a raw stream does not guarantee standardized motion events or device discovery.
What ONVIF does
ONVIF defines interoperability profiles for IP security products. Implementations vary, so the label alone does not prove that your recorder will receive every smart event.

- Can RTSP be enabled without a subscription?
- Which ONVIF profile is supported?
- Does your recorder receive person/vehicle events or only video?
- Does third-party streaming reduce resolution or features?
Bottom line
For open local storage, support for both is valuable. RTSP gives you the stream; ONVIF can make recorder integration cleaner.
