Bolted-Down vs Portable Home Safes
Compare bolted and portable safes by removal resistance, installation, rental constraints, fire protection, concealment and relocation cost.
A portable safe and a bolted safe solve different problems. Portability helps when you move frequently or cannot drill. Bolting down helps prevent a thief from turning your entire safe into a take-away container.
Tradeoff table
| Factor | Bolted safe | Portable safe |
|---|---|---|
| Removal resistance | Higher when anchored into suitable structure | Depends mostly on weight and concealment |
| Installation | Requires suitable anchor location | Minimal |
| Rental fit | May conflict with lease restrictions | Easier to relocate |
| Move-out | More work | Simple |
| Concealment | Placement is constrained by anchoring location | More flexible |
Anchoring does not create fire protection
Theft resistance and fire resistance are separate specifications. A safe can be difficult to remove and still offer poor heat protection, or it can be well insulated against fire but easy to carry away. Evaluate both.
Bottom line
If you can legally and safely anchor the safe, bolting generally improves theft resistance. If you cannot, use weight, concealment and disciplined contents selection to reduce the downside of portability.
