Best PoE Security Camera for Frigate at Night
For Frigate, night performance starts with the camera optics and stream architecture. Our top verified choices separate two jobs: preserving color with ambient light, or using predictable infrared in very dark scenes.
| Model | Night-use advantage | Local-NVR fit |
|---|---|---|
| CX810 | F1.0 ColorX low-light design; best where some ambient light exists and color detail matters | PoE, RTSP, ONVIF, microSD/local recording |
| RLC-810A | Conventional fixed-view 4K architecture for predictable always-on perimeter recording | PoE, RTSP/ONVIF family support, NVR/FTP/microSD |
| RLC-811A | 5× optical zoom lets you concentrate pixels on a darker driveway or gate instead of recording a huge scene | PoE, RTSP, ONVIF, local storage |
Color night vision versus infrared
A wide-aperture color camera can preserve useful color when there is street, porch or landscape lighting. In near-total darkness, infrared can be more predictable. Do not buy based on the phrase “night vision” alone; match the camera to the actual lighting at the evidence zone.
Why this matters for Frigate
Frigate cannot recover detail the camera never captured. A stable low-resolution detect stream and high-quality recording stream are important, but so are shutter behavior, contrast and target size at night. We therefore prioritize local-stream cameras first and proprietary cloud AI second.
