Best Fingerprint Smart Locks: What Actually Matters

Choose a fingerprint smart lock by biometric fallback, PIN access, physical key recovery, remote management, battery failure and guest-code workflows.

A fingerprint reader is useful because it removes the phone and key from normal entry, but it should never be the only practical way back into the house. The best fingerprint lock is the one with strong fallback paths when a finger does not scan, batteries run low or connectivity fails.

Decision rule: rank fallback access and door reliability above biometric novelty. Fingerprint speed is irrelevant if a dead battery or misaligned bolt can lock you out.

Fingerprint smart-lock checklist

FactorWhy it matters
Fingerprint readerFast daily entry without carrying a key or opening an app.
PIN keypadBackup for guests, family and failed fingerprint reads.
Physical key or emergency powerCritical recovery path when electronics fail.
Remote accessUseful for letting in contractors or family when you are away.
Guest-code controlsTemporary access should be separated from owner credentials.
Battery warningsWarnings need enough lead time to service the lock before failure.

Integrated fingerprint vs accessory fingerprint

LOCKLY integrates fingerprint access into several lock designs. August takes a different route: the current Wi-Fi Smart Lock preserves the existing exterior deadbolt and can add fingerprint capability through its Keypad Touch ecosystem. Neither architecture is universally better. Integrated biometric hardware is cleaner if fingerprint is the primary entry method; retrofit architecture is attractive when preserving the existing exterior lock matters more.

Door alignment is the hidden variable

A smart lock motor should not have to force a sticky deadbolt. Before blaming fingerprint hardware or battery life, make sure the door closes cleanly and the bolt moves freely by hand. Mechanical resistance creates reliability problems that software cannot fix.

Bottom line

Buy a fingerprint smart lock as a resilient access system, not as a biometric gadget. The best design gives you fingerprint convenience plus at least one dependable non-biometric fallback.
