Apartment Security Camera Placement: Door, Window or Entryway?

In a small apartment, one well-positioned camera often produces more useful evidence than several cameras aimed broadly.

Facing the entry door

This is the strongest default for documenting unauthorized entry because everyone entering the unit crosses a predictable zone. Place the camera near face height or slightly above while avoiding an extreme top-down angle.

Looking through a window

This can monitor a private exterior area without mounting outside, but glass creates reflections and infrared night vision may bounce back into the lens. Test after dark before relying on the setup.

Covering a living area

A broad interior view provides context after entry but captures more private activity. If the security objective is door access, a narrower entryway view is usually more proportionate and easier to live with.

Power and storage

Apartment interiors make plug-in cameras practical, reducing battery maintenance. Local storage avoids recurring fees, while an indoor hub or remote copy can preserve evidence if the camera itself is damaged.

Placement rule: put the camera where the event you care about must happen, not where the camera can see the most square footage.
